It’s worth reading this Guardian piece on a US right wing strategy to discredit teacher strikes using propaganda. I’m still sometimes surprised by the right’s willingness to destroy innocent lives to obtain their goals. Treating teachers as their mortal enemy sounds like the plan of a cartoon villain, but the plans and the harm are very real.
This is brilliant, true, and a concise description of a core problem with our nation today.
It’s wonderful to see this young woman speaking from a place of strength and wisdom. She and those like her will create a better world for all of us.
As a former Life Member of the NRA and a former Army Infantryman and Deputy Sheriff, I’ve spent years with firearms, carrying them and using them, and I know firsthand what they’re capable of. When I joined the NRA as a young man, I quickly realized that the NRA was becoming radicalized, turning away from a group dedicated to education and sports and becoming an extremist group dedicated to preserving itself and its twisted vision of ideal America. I remember getting my first voting guide for the NRA board and realizing that everyone I could vote for was an extremist. In the many years since that time, the NRA has become more openly hateful and used ever more extreme propaganda to convince whites their identity, safety, and way of life is under attack. The NRA’s rhetoric has focused on encouraging whites to buy more firearms before they’re banned and to carry those firearms everywhere, and to vote only for politicians who commit to making firearms easily available to everyone and to protecting their identity and way of life.
After the latest school shooting made possible by the NRA and its supporters and politicians, Dallas Sportscaster Dale Hansen speaks of the truth behind the right’s inaction on gun reform and aggression against those who push for reform, even attacking the victims of gun violence.
If we’re to make further progress as a nation, the United States must destroy the NRA and other extremist groups. We’re facing an existential threat from far right groups aligned with Russia and white nationalism and the NRA has publicly aligned itself with these groups. As citizens, this fight is ours. We know we cannot count on the current GOP to help us defeat these threats. We must stand up and take them on wherever we find them.
Anyone who supports Trump needs to answer for his character. If they claim to support him for religious or moral reasons, they’re too delusional to be reached and you should walk away to save yourself time and frustration.
If you’re interested in history and social justice, this travel essay and reflection on the state and consequences of racial hatred in the deep south is worth your time. It’s rich with historical fact and personal experiences of life in Selma, focused on the civil rights struggle from the late 60s up to the present.
It’s time to stop sympathetically profiling white supremacists. We know why men start fires. We know what these people want.
This is worth reading and sharing with anyone it might affect. This is a war for the soul and future of human civilization. We must all take sides and we must treat those who oppose us as our enemies.
The Post’s headline is “Christian women gather on the Mall and criticize feminism”
A more accurate headline for this reporting would read, “White religious extremists demonstrate against women’s rights.”
These women and their beliefs bear little resemblance to the Jesus Christ of the Gospels and stand opposed to his core teachings. They are Christian in the same way that Islamic State is Muslim.
These women are grossly misled or willfully ignorant about feminism:
“For years, the feminists lied to us,” Christian author Lisa Bevere shouted from the stage. “They said for us to be powerful as women, we needed to act like men.”
Those gathered are willfully ignorant of the founding principles of the United States and demonize Obama:
Linda Shebesta of Burleson, Texas – “We believe our nation was founded as a Christian nation. The enemy is trying to take it in another direction, not Christianity,” she said. She saw lots of proof of Satan at work during the Obama administration. “We believe God put Donald Trump in,” Shebesta said.
I’m thankful that the white Christian majority is getting weaker with each passing year and, provided the US survives another century, there’s nothing the GOP or these hateful Christians can do to stop the progress of the United States toward becoming a more diverse, loving, and just nation.
When people complain about the way blacks protest, they’re really saying, “Why can’t they protest in a way that I can blissfully ignore, the same way I’ve ignored racism my entire life?”
Harriet Tubman is a true badass woman and enduring symbol of greatness.
The Washington Post notes that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has apparently decided not to replace the portrait of slave owner and mass murderer Andrew Jackson with that of the great Harriet Tubman on the US $20 bill. Mnuchin and the rest of this racist administration are part of a dying ideology, and great human beings like Tubman will overcome this hatred and have the last word.
